A trip to Warner Brothers World in Abu Dhabi brings back fond childhood memories
It all started when Disney opened up “Disneyland” – an escape into a magical place! From beloved characters like Mickey Mouse coming up to greet you to thrilling rides that bring back that child-like excitement, theme parks slowly eased their way into our lives.
One such latest addition to my second home, the UAE is the Warner Bros. World in Abu Dhabi. During the years that I stayed there, the main attraction in Abu Dhabi has always been Ferrari World. Usually, tourists prefer making a day’s trip to this city from Dubai and, somewhere, WB (Warner Bros.) became an underdog to me. As the year 2020 began and on my second trip to the UAE by February, I really wanted to visit this theme park which was truly loved by all!
I checked myself into the Ritz Carlton a day prior because you don’t relish things when they are rushed. Post checkout, I had full intentions of leaving my luggage with the concierge while I spent the day at WB but I was pleasantly surprised that they had special arrangements for proper travel luggage storage and at an extremely reasonable price at the park itself. Before I reached the largest indoor theme park, I already admired this spectacular tourist paradise.
Upon arriving, the switch from being an adult to a star-struck child happened at lightning speed. Well, let’s blame that on Flash being in the vicinity. This park is wonderfully divided into 6 sections within – Warner Bros. Plaza, Bedrock, Dynamite Glutch, Cartoon Junction, Gotham City and Metropolis. Each part has immersive themed experiences featuring attractions and rides which are characteristic of that particular world. Being a particular fan of the classic cartoons I enthusiastically entered Cartoon Junction where I encountered a myriad of my favourite characters such as Tom and Jerry, Tweety and Sylvester, Scooby-Doo etc. Also as luck would have it, I visited it too close to the pandemic outbreak thus I was, in a way, fortunate as it felt I pretty much had the entire place to myself. This section has some easy-going rides for children along with a really fun Tom and Jerry themed roller coaster ride. They also have an interactive yet whimsical show with Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny. If you’re lucky enough, you might just get a chance to shake a leg with the characters on stage.
Post being captivated by my childhood treasured cartoons, I moved on to the Gotham section and within a fraction of a second, the entire ambience changed.
Batman fans will love this dark and gritty recreation of the urban skyline of Gotham City, the home of the Dark Knight! This section really fascinated me as one of the rides was a flight simulator which felt beyond real. The Joker Funhouse is surely not for the faint-hearted as this maze is a tough one to figure. I am a thrill-seeker with a tough stomach thankfully, so I thoroughly enjoyed the Riddler Revolution ride which spins and swings at the same time, definitely a hurricane of an experience.
An experience with Batman left me wanting more of the enchantment so I hurriedly made my way to Metropolis, the land of superheroes. The DC Comic universe has been the trending topic of our everyday lives. This section features a gorgeous artificial sky of eternal sunset. Just as superheroes make you experience a vision of the future, the cinema oriented rides are truly so advanced in technology! Superman 360 is a short movie which in its true sense plays all around as we stand in the centre and watch awestruck as the action unfolds around us. Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey makes sure you feel like you are in virtual reality where you smell, see and feel everything — even things falling down towards the earth at an alarmingly fast speed. You experience all this while being seated in your seat.
Still high on the buzz of adrenaline, I paved my way to Dynamite Glutch. This land brings to life the wacky adventures of the futuristic Jetsons and more back-to-basic drama of the roadrunner. The only attractive ride in this land was the roller coaster “Fast and Furry-ous”, the Jetsons comic orbiter isn’t a bad option for the kids to have a thrilling experience.
A stone’s throw away stood Bedrock, the land of Fred Flintstone. It takes you back to the Stone Age at this Flintstones inspired section did feel Yabada-Abu-Dhabi-Do! This land was rather underwhelming in comparison to the rest as it just has one ride: The Flintstones Bedrock River Adventure. Even though the ride is stupendous, I yearned for more which was in some way compensated by pictures with all the lovely characters.
With a mammoth $1B price tag, there are plenty of attractions at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi that are sure to keep you exhilarated. As I finally made my way back to the land which greets you on your way in and out “The Warner Bros. Plaza”. This is a celebration of the cartoons and movies that Warner Bros. is best known for. A plethora of stores and boutiques along with restaurants lie at the heart of this land. I too divulged in my guilty pleasures and bought some souvenirs and character merchandise. It felt phenomenal living a day in sheer indulgence.
As I walked out the doors, the childish zest within me was rekindled, it sparked a flame of fervent joy. Sitting in my car ride back to Dubai I looked at all the pictures from the day with a mischievous smile on my face and a sense of fulfilment, merriment and sheer contentment.
